The Films of Leonard W. Sizemore, Descriptions by Lillian Sizemore
The primary filmmaker of this collection is Leonard Wood Sizemore. This particular clip was shot by his wife, Gisella Sizemore along with her companions and family members.
Leonard Wood Sizemore (1920-2000) was an American soldier, a mechanic, a watchmaker, and an early adaptor of new technologies. Leonard married his Italian bride, Gisella, in Milan, Italy in 1947 and together they came to America to begin anew. Leonard always managed to have the latest "gizmos". He had good cameras, and he knew how to use them. Leonard taught the whole family how to pan and shoot and they all had a hand in filming over the years. Leonard made great strides in his life after having grown up in poverty in rural Kentucky, his 8mm home movies from the 1950s-80s depict a white 'Middle America' with a love of family and friends, antique cars, parades and picnics. Leonard kept the campfires glowing around his meaty grills and lively home movie nights. This poignant footage depicts a pursuit of the 'American Dream' taking place in-the-midst of political assassinations, cold war friction and civil rights marches.
Primarily Gisella Sizemore, Lilly and Gianni Captuto. The camera was passed between them. In March 1960 Leonard gave Gisella the movie camera for her solo trip to visit her younger and only sister, Liliana. Liliana and her husband Gianni lived in Milan. Zia (Lilly) worked at Trans World Airlines (TWA) and would have had access to Transatlantic air bookings. They traveled together by car (Fiat Nuovo 500) to Venice (this clip #9714) and the Italian Riviera (Costa Azzurra - clip #9712). Mom and Dad had three little kids by this time (Norman, Lillian, and Melissa), and Dad took care of the kids along with help from his Aunt Anna Lou who lived down the street. This clip is edited in such away that the trip jumps around and is not in chronological order. Many of the scenes last for a few seconds before moving on to a different topic altogether.
